Medieval Magic, Feather Dreams, Ancient Vibes
plus an afternoon session
9:00 am in-person meeting followed by program. Member Annmarie M will facilitate this informative and hands on program on the properties of vellum. If you mastered lettering with pen and ink in the traditional modern-day way, join us for a playful day working like the monks of Medieval time writing on vellum (animal skin) with a quill (turkey wing feather). Whether you’re new to vellum and quills or experienced with these medieval tools join us for a fun experience and welcome to the medieval-side of calligraphy. We’ll cover vellum’s unique qualities with tips and example. Pens are great, quills are legendary. We will create gorgeous letters with quills cut especially for you. Bring your curiosity and your best “I can do this” energy. The Guild will supply each member in attendance a small piece of vellum and quill. Members are asked to bring practice paper, gouache, ink, pencil, ruler, eraser and a short quote with few words. More info to follow. An afternoon session to follow if you'd like to frame your exhibit pieces or play longer.

Blackletter Workshop
FULL Day 9:00am -3:30pm
*Registration required
Blackletter is one of the most recognizable styles of calligraphy known for its strong visual character. In this workshop, we will explore the history and development of blackletter, from textura and fraktur used in manuscripts to the more decorative and expressive styles that become more hand-drawn in art of formally designing, writing, and illuminating more modern designs! We will focus on basic shapes and traditional forms that create these blackletter strokes and incorporate decorative details. Using both the broad-edged pen and brush you will practice the traditional structure of blackletter. Once we cover the basics, you will be encouraged to experiment and develop personal interpretations of Blackletter! Suitable for all levels, this workshop is open to both beginners and experienced calligraphers!
